Well written, complete and informative. I am not new to fishing, but am new to fly fishing. The up-to-date and in depth discussion and illustrations are a great refresher for any fisherman.

Fly fishing is a traditional activity that has gained international repertoire as a sport or hobby. Many people nowadays have taken to this due to the close to nature appeal and the challenges it offers. Fly fishing is also preferred as it is seen as a safer sport in comparison to hunting. Fly fishing is performed in lakes and rivers where one can simply sit by the river banks or head out a few hundred yards into the lake. Those who can afford it can venture out deep into the sea on a luxury yacht for a fly fishing session.

Once you've decided to hit the waters for some fly fishing sessions, there are some pre fishing procedures to be done. Primarily, there is the shelling out of money towards fly fishing tackle. Buying fly fishing tackle or fly fishing flies does not mean that one has to rob a bank. Most basic equipment can be bought at reasonable prices and one does not necessarily have to Tippet go for the higher priced brands, especially if one is just a beginner. To start off, a good well priced reliable rod is not hard to come by. While the higher end rods obviously are quite expensive, a decently priced set of rood and reel will surely catch fish as well. Look out for a rod that is usable in most conditions and sturdy enough as well.

The fly fishing reel and spool are the next most important of fly fishing tackle. A reel is used to bring in or dispense the line while the spool holds the line. Most regular fishermen will find the need to use multiple types of lines and hence it is best that one buys extra spools. Having at least two spools would be a good idea, if not for now, maybe later. The fly fishing line consists of two parts; the backing and the line itself. The backing is the first part which is used to game the fish. The fly lines vary and will depend on the kind of rod that one uses. A beginner would find that a light weight line would be easiest to use until they get sufficient practise. One can get the line fitted onto the reel during purchase. It requires a specific machine for this purpose.

Additional line segments that also have to be purchased include the leaders and the tippets. The leader attaches to the fly line using a very strong knot known as the surgeons' knot. The last line is the finest among all the line assemblies and is known as the tippet. It is transparent being made of a monofilament. The tippet will hold up the lure when the cast is thrown and hence the need for transparency. The tippet also has to be replaced every time a cast is thrown and hence it is best to buy a lot. For fly fishing flies, one can procure large packs of fly fishing flies at a regular fishing store whereas some prefer to produce their own fly fishing flies to specific patterns.

Krista Tippett presents an extraordinary dialog that allows the reader to make up his own mind about things. The presentation is open, honest and accesses the wisdom of many exceptional people. This is a must read in a world that is trying to determine how to blend religion and science into a productive and inclusionary discussion. Well done.

In principle, this book should be really good: a fundamentally important topic, a conversational format which has the potential to be highly engaging, an inquisitive interviewer who sincerely wants to understand, and a diverse cast of interviewees which includes some well-known thinkers. Unfortunately, the book doesn’t really work because it comes up somewhat short in all of these areas:

- Studying the interaction between science and religion is a great way to deepen understanding of both, as well as explore the big questions, but this book offers a relatively superficial treatment compared to the many other good books which are available on this topic.

- Instead of being engaging, the conversational format turns out to be rather rambling and unfocused.

- Tippett doesn’t contribute much insight of her own to the conversations, and she’s unable to adequately probe and challenge her interviewees. I think she has the potential to eventually be an effective interviewer on this topic, but she’s not there yet.

- Some of the interviews cover interesting ideas, but they’re only tangential to the topic of science/religion interaction.

To give more sense of the scope of the book, here are some notes on the ten interviews:

- Freeman Dyson emphasizes how mysterious reality is, and the related need to approach things with a sense of humor. Paul Davies expresses a sense of wonder at the intricate harmony of the universe and the existence of life and mind in it, thus suggesting a purpose to it all.

- Sherwin Nuland expresses wonder at the complexity of the human body and its ability to (usually) restore equilibrium. He also talks about how things can go wrong, especially the case of clinical depression.

- Mehmet Oz talks about the importance of integrative medicine, drawing on global medical knowledge and experience, and he (only) touches on the role spirituality might play in it.

- James Moore defends the view that Darwin didn’t oppose theology, but rather saw nature as a wondrous example of God’s handiwork.

- V.V. Raman emphasizes both the value and limits of both science and religion, and the resulting unavoidability of mystery. In my opinion, this may be the best interview in the book.

- Janna Levin presents quantum uncertainty, relativistic constraints, and Godel’s theorems as examples of the limits to our knowledge, while also expressing doubt about the possibility of free will (a contradiction?).

- Michael McCullough describes how we’re wired for both revenge and forgiveness because both have proven to be evolutionarily adaptive.

- Esther Sternberg describes how stress contributes to immunological disorders, and the resulting need to manage stress.

- Andrew Solomon, Parker Palmer, and Anita Barrows talk about depression and debunk the myth that it’s simply an intense form of sadness.

- John Polkinghorne tries hard to reconcile science and Christianity, thus offering creative but highly speculative ideas to explain free will, the existence of individual souls, the possibility of God’s intervening in the world, the problem of evil, the value of mystery, and the plausibility of God having limitations.

What does this all add up to? I think it’s too much of a mixed bag to be amenable to a useful synthesis, and Tippett makes no attempt at such a synthesis by providing an epilogue.

Overall, I appreciate Tippett’s effort and I do think this book has some value (hence my 3 stars), but it’s too rambling and superficial, especially for people who have already devoted a lot of reading and thought to the topic. Novices might get more out of the book, at least as a vehicle to get their feet wet, but I think they would also benefit from a more systematic presentation. For better options, the following are a few examples of good books on this topic:

Science and Religion: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
Science and Religion: From Conflict to Conversation
The Oxford Handbook of Religion and Science (Oxford Handbooks in Religion and Theology)

I enjoyed the sample however without the text to speech capability, I can’t enjoy the book while driving which for me is something I need.

I’d taken my daughter to the Royal Dutch Ballet Christmas production of the Nutcracker yearly while we lived overseas and she developed a passion for the ballet as a result – this was the perfect Xmas gift! Gelsey Kirkland is stunning and, of course, Baryshnikov is the quintessential dancer – this is really the ultimate version.

Your service was very good. I had a problem because I am an older person, and the hand co-ordination is not always the best. But, the item a DVD of the Ballet, wa shipped promptly and arrived in good condition and it came earlier than I thought it would. And, of course, I promptly had to play it. Thanks very much

I remember watching this on PBS when I was young. My 5 year old daughter is taking ballet and I thought she would like to watch this video. Well it turns out she loves it and requests to watch it! I will have to say I’m VERY surprised that she really enjoys it. The story & dancing is really outstanding. Glad I purchased this!

Received the dvd in a timely fashion and sealed. Everything went smoothly.

Thanks

This was another stocking stuffer gift for my husband. He’s returning back to fly fishing after several years of constant working and not having the time to do so. He says this little book is chocked full of tips and guides that are new to him. Nice size for fitting into one’s fishing vest for quick reference “on the fly” (you might say)!
